Did Yashasvi Jaiswal sell pani puri?
Yashaswi was just 11 years old when he decided to move to Mumbai in order to fulfil his dreams and his father had let him go because he couldn’t afford a proper meal for his family. He used to stay in gardeners’ tent and sell “fruits” and “pani puri” in the evening for a living.
He had his only uncle in Mumbai who stayed there, and whom he hardly knew. His uncle got him a job at a dairy where he was allowed to work and sleep. During those hard times, Yashaswi used to attend school and then practice cricket all alone. Because of which he was fired from the workplace. After that, his uncle somehow placed him in the Muslim United Cricket Club in Azad Maidan, Mumbai. There in the club, he started playing regular cricket.
Harris Shield Tournament and Under 19 World Cup
Once, during a practice session, his local coach Jwala Singh spotted him bowling. He stated, “I was just standing behind the nets and it was a tricky wicket to bat on as every other player was struggling but when Yashaswi came in, started hitting the ball cleanly, I was impressed and immediately talked to him.”
His coach took Yashaswi under his wings, and provided him everything and would train him every day. Soon Yashaswi started taking part in tournaments and competitions. In the Harris Shield Tournament, he scored 319 not out and took 13/99, which was the highest ever in a school tournament.
Within a short period, he had already scored 52 centuries and took more than 200 wickets. Yashaswi eventually but shortly got selected in U-16 and then in the Indian U-19 team.
In 2018 he performed quite well in Asia Cup. When he got selected for U-19, he was sent to the National Cricket Academy in Banglore, surprisingly, his roommate was the son of the legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun Tendulkar.
