Will Pucovski is hailed as the next big thing in Australian cricket. Pucovski made his debut in Test Cricket in the third Test of 2020-21 Test series between India and Australia. In his four years of domestic cricket, the 22-year old has been through a lot, from suffering numerous concussion injuries to taking breaks from professional cricket, citing mental health problems.
Even before making his debut in first-class cricket, Pucovski had already made headlines in various newspapers across Australia. The 2016 under-19 Championships saw him amassing 650 runs at an astonishing average of 162.50. He grabbed eyeballs after smashing four consecutive centuries in the tournament.
His phenomenal striking in the tournament helped him make his debut in Sheffield Shield cricket. In February 2017, he scored 28 runs in his first game for Victoria. Pucovski scored his first first-class century in the following year against Queensland. He amassed 188 runs off 414 balls during his knock.
However, the first couple of years for him in the first-class cricket also brought him a lot of agony and pain. Two weeks after hitting his maiden Test century, Pucovski was hit on the head by a short ball from Sean Abbot, for the third time in his first-class career. Pucovski was subbed out in the game and didn’t feature in a single game that season.
He made a comeback the following season and notched a double-century against Western Australia at Perth. He scored 243 runs and with that, Will became the ninth player in the history of Australian cricket to score a double century before the age of 21. The Australian cricketer scored 649 runs in 7 matches at an average of 57.48 in the 2018-19 Sheffield Sheild season. He notched 2 centuries and three half-centuries in just 7 games.
Looking at how well he was playing that season, not a lot of people knew what he was going through mentally at that time. A week after scoring his double-century, Pucovski opted for a break from the game, citing mental health issues.
“It was one of those things where what it looked like from the outside wasn’t quite matching up with what it was on the inside… I was more confused than at any other time in my life,” he told Fox Cricket in January 2019.
Will Pucovski earned his maiden national call-up ahead of the Test series against Sri Lanka. He turned up for the game between Cricket Australia XI and Sri Lanka in Hobart but couldn’t get a game in the series. His Test debut finally came against India in the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series. Pucovski announced his arrival in a fine fashion as he scored a half-century in the first innings of his Test Cricket career.
