VK Vismaya is an Indian sprinter born in Kannur district of Kerala. She specializes in 400 meters and was part of the Indian women’s 4 × 400 meters relay team that won the gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games. Growing up, Vismaya didn’t take sports seriously and was not even passionate about it. She was enjoying her studies and was pretty focused. She was pursuing science and even scored above 92%. It was in college – Assumption College at Changanacherry in Kottayam when she thought of giving a shot. Vismaya gave equal importance to both sports and studies and eventually, it all went well. She completed B.Sc in Mathematics and also got a good opportunity in sports final year of college.
Turning point
The All-India Inter-University Athletics Championships in 2017 was the turning point in Vismaya’s sports career. She had clocked 53.63s to win silver at the 400m event at the university meet and was selected to the national camp. Coach Galina Bukharina spotted her at the camp and training under her was a game-changer for Kerela sprinter.

Vismaya once said in an interview-
“When you work hard day and night for winning medals for the country and not been recognized, it is somewhat sad. We are not looking for fame, but maybe some support from all would motivate us more!”
- Vismaya is India’s most improved woman athlete in the year 2019. She has bettered her 400m personal best thrice in one month in meets in Poland and the Czech Republic
- Vismaya came into sports because of her sister and dreams of having her own house, job and wishes to take care of her sister
- Her only disappointment is people are not aware of athletics.
