Former Indian left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi was born in Gadag of Mysore district in Karnataka. He was born in a middle-class Kannada speaking Brahmin family. During his childhood days, Sunil Joshi used to travel around 40 miles to Hubbali daily to practice as there were no facilities in his hometown. He had to return back in time to attend school. His dedication clearly depicted the fact that he wanted to pursue cricket as his career very early in his life.
Sunil Joshi started playing for Karnataka in the early 90s in first-class cricket. He achieved an impressive double of scoring 500 runs with the bat and taking 50 wickets in a single season of 1995-96. With that performance, he was knocking on the doors of Indian selection.
Sunil Joshi was selected for the England tour and he made his test debut at Edgbaston in 1996. Anil Kumble was the front line spinner in the team and Sunil Joshi’s role was to compliment Kumble with his left-arm spin and to contribute with some lower-order runs. He was not selected for the ICC world cup 1999 even after his consistent run at international level during that time.
Sunil Joshi 5/6
During LG cup against South Africa in 1999, the best performance of Sunil Joshi came. He registered the figures of 10-6-6-5 in the second match as South Africa was dismissed for 117 and India won the game comfortably. He was criticized at various stages of his career of particularly being slow in the air and as a result of that; batsmen were getting enough time to adjust against him.
Sunil Joshi had a stint at Bedfordshire County Cricket Club in England during the 2004-05 season. He was also in the squad of Royal Challengers Bangalore for 2008 & 2009 IPL seasons. He officially declared his retirement from all forms of the game on 21st June, 2012.
Sunil Joshi Selector from Coach
Sunil Joshi became a professional coach after his retirement and has worked with teams like Hyderabad, Jammu and Kashmir, Assam in the Indian domestic circuit. He also associated with Oman, USA and Bangladesh on the international stage for the role of spin-consultant. In March this year, BCCI announced the appointment of Sunil Joshi as the chief selector for Indian national men’s team. He will take over the role of MSK Prasad.
