Indeed, the time is a great healer, and success a soothing balm, but the pain lingers somewhere deep in the heart. Only successful people, with an indomitable will, can use it as a foundation for their future success. The current Indian Cricket team vice-captain Rohit Sharma, just like most successful people in their respective fields, has had his fair share of ups and downs, but his motivation, and will was too great for any ephemeral obstacle.

The 32-year-old had an exclusive conversation with former England superstar Kevin Pietersen, where the latter asked Sharma about the lowest point of his career so far, and the Indian star replied, “Not getting picked for the 2011 World Cup was the saddest moment as it was happening in our own backyard, the final was played at my home ground.”

“Not getting picked for the 2011 World Cup was the saddest moment as it was happening in our own backyard, the final was played at my home ground.”

That said, the Mumbai Indians captain was humbled enough to acknowledge that it was his own fault, his poor form prior to the world cup that cost him a place in the final squad.

“I was due to my performances, I was not at my best,” Sharma replied when KP asked him why he was overlooked by the selectors back in 2011.

India went on to lift the world cup after beating Sri Lanka in the finals at Wankhede Stadium, with Yuvraj Singh winning the man-of-the-series for his all-round display.

Sharma, on the other hand, went from strength to strength and is now an indispensable part of Indian cricket. Although, India came up short from meeting its target in 2019 World Cup, Sharma, at least on a personal level, had a world cup to remember as he clocked five centuries the first man to achieve such a feat.
