Richard Berrington is a match-winner for Scotland who fulfilled their long awaited dream of the first victory over an ICC Full Member team Bangladesh in T20I in 2012.

Richie was nominated for the ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Decade award in 2020. He is named as the national team captain after Kyle Coetzer stepped down from the position.

Career

Born on 3 April 1987 in Pretoria, South Africa, Richie has been a part of Scotland Cricket since his teenage. He represented the national side from under-13s up to under-19s. Berrington was multi-talented and highly skilled, and while playing for Scotland in under 19s, the all-rounder was still eligible to play under 17s.  

By 18, Richie was sent to India as part of the European Cricket Council Development team and was included in International Cricket Council’s first Winter Training Camp in Pretoria.

The Scottish all-rounder made his One Day International (ODI) debut for Scotland against Ireland in July 2008, while his maiden century came against the same team in 2014. Considering Richies’ performance and hitting ability in the Scottish A team and ODIs, he was added to the T20I squad against Ireland. 

Richie was added to the 2015 Cricket World Cup squad the following year. Though he hasn’t been consistent in his game, Richie became a regular member of the Scottish team, with an opportunity to play in ICC World Twenty20 2009. 

Berrington had showcased multiple abilities on the field, which nearly impressed the Scotland Cricket Board. In march 2010, Richie was rewarded with a full-time contract with the national side.

Berrington’s career-best List A score of 110 came against Namibia in June 2017. He also captained his first international matches for Scotland in January 2018 during the 2017–18 United Arab Emirates Tri-Nation Series.

Richie served Scotland in the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier and in ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier a year later. The power hitter played for Edmonton Royals in the 2019 Global T20 Canada league. He has also been vice-captain of Scotland’s provisional squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
