Pravin Ramesh Jadhav’s ascent from a life of poverty near a drain in Maharashtra to the grand stage of the Olympics is a testament to his extraordinary determination and talent. Born on July 6, 1996, Jadhav’s early years were fraught with challenges, including a lack of basic necessities such as electricity and water. Despite these hardships and his family’s initial disapproval, Jadhav found solace and hope in archery, a sport he took up just over six years ago in an effort to escape poverty.

Growing up in the drought-prone village of Sarade in Maharashtra’s Satara district, Jadhav’s childhood was marked by daily struggles. As the son of daily wage laborers, his future seemed predestined for the same path. However, a primary school teacher named Vikas Bhujbal recognized Jadhav’s athletic potential and nurtured his abilities, seeing sports as a way to secure a better future for him.

Although Jadhav initially faced difficulties at the district level, Bhujbal’s dedicated support, including providing proper nutrition and training, helped him improve. By age 13, Jadhav earned a spot at the prestigious Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune, where his athletic talents flourished.

Archery

Despite his promise as a runner, a drill at Krida Prabodhini School revealed Jadhav’s potential in archery. His impressive accuracy in throwing balls into a ring led to his shift to this new sport. The transition was challenging, as Jadhav struggled with the physical demands of handling a recurve bow. However, with the encouragement of Bhujbal and Mahesh Palkar, he persevered, securing his place at the academy through sheer determination.

Achievements

Jadhav’s commitment quickly paid off. In 2016, at 19, he represented India at the Asia Cup Stage 1, winning a bronze medal with the men’s recurve team. This achievement marked the beginning of his successful international career. Later that year, he further showcased his talent at the Archery World Cup stage in Medellín, leading his team in the qualification round with an impressive score.

In 2017, Jadhav joined the Indian Army under the sports quota, which provided stability for his family. Despite his family’s preference for him to focus on a military career, his mentors insisted he continue with archery. This support proved crucial, as Jadhav went on to achieve significant milestones.

In 2019, Jadhav made history at the World Archery Championships, winning a silver medal with teammates Atanu Das and Tarundeep Rai. Their journey included defeating higher-seeded teams and securing India’s place at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Jadhav’s performance established him as a formidable presence in archery.

Jadhav’s success continued in 2021, where he was the only Indian archer selected for the Asian Archery Championship, winning a silver medal. In 2024, he clinched gold at the Asia Cup in Baghdad and achieved another historic gold at the Archery World Cup in Shanghai with teammates Dhiraj Bommadevara and Tarundeep Rai.
