A British-Indian who went onto becoming the first-ever Asian born athlete to win an Olympic Medal. He won two Silver medals in athletics in the 1900 Paris Olympic representing Colonial India under the British rule.
Apart from being an athlete, Norman Gilbert Pritchard was a successful stage actor who shifted his base permanently to Great Britain in 1905 at the age of 28. He later strived into the acting talent which he possessed and moved to the United States to live his dreams.
First Olympics Medal for India
Not only the first Asian born Olympic medalist, but Norman was also the first Indian athlete to compete in the Olympic Games. He participated and won Silver medals in 200m sprint and 200m Hurdles in the 1900 Olympic Games held in Paris.
Before moving to Great Britain permanently in 1905, he served as the Secretary for Indian Football Association from 1900 to 1902. He had a British ethnicity despite being born in Calcutta (which was a part of British Raj before independence) but the Indian Olympic Council (IOC) regarded him competing for India. On October 31st 1929, he died due to a brain malady at the age of 52 years in Los Angeles.
