The javelin throw is an old sport and even existed in the ancient Olympics. In this event, the javelin, a spear of 2.5 m in length, is thrown. After missing out the entire 2019 season with an elbow injury, Chopra returned to action in January 2020 and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.
Chopra won the Lisbon City Athletics Meet with a throw of 83.18 m. He is part of a 26-member team announced by the Athletics Federation of India to participate in the Tokyo Olympics.

His second-best throw of 87.86 m in Potchefstroom, South Africa, helped him qualify for his first Olympics. Neeraj Chopra’s best throw is 88.06 m, with which he clinched gold in the 2018 Asian games held at Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia.
