Nathan Ellis is a fighter on and off the field, Australian fast-bowler, Nathan Ellis’ story is no less than an emotional roller coaster. Started playing cricket at a young age of 8, Nathan Ellis grew up admiring the likes of Brett Lee and Andy Bichel. Gradually, he developed an obsession with fast-bowling. For Ellis, fast-bowling was something he loved and always did since his early days. The Obsession grew stronger with time and after 14 years of age, it wasn’t just kids cricket for him. Cricket meant business for the Australian fast bowler since.
However, it was never going to be easy to become a professional cricketer, given that he was born in a place which was known for producing world-class fast bowlers, New South Wales.
Despite dominating the NSW premier cricket (160 wickets at 22 in four seasons), he failed to make into the age-group cricket selections. But Ellis wasn’t going to give up on his dream so easily.
The year 2017 saw him relocating to Hobart in search of better opportunities. Life wasn’t easy at Hobart for Ellis, to say the least. It was hard to make ends meet. He took up various jobs like furniture, landscaping, installing air-conditioners, labouring on construction sites etc.
However, the Australian seamer made sure that cricket remains his utmost priority and he didn’t divert his focus elsewhere. The move finally paid off as he was called to bowl to the Tasmanian squad. After years of putting in hard yards, Ellis finally bore fruits in 2018-19 season. On 23rd September 2019, he made his List A debut for Tasmania in 2019-20 Marsh One-Day Cup.
He ended the season as the third-highest wicket-taker, claiming 12 wickets in 7 games. With those performances, he rubbished all the criticism which came his way for not being deserving enough to be a professional cricketer.
His first-class debut came on 24th February 2020 in the 2019-20 Sheffield Shield season. Ellis has also exhibited some notable performances in the shortest format. Turning up for Hobart Hurricanes, Ellis has picked 24 wickets in 25 matches at an economy of 7.89.
The 26-year old received a lot of praise for delivering pinpoint yorkers. While he has played domestic cricket in all three formats, he reckons that isn’t capable enough to play with the red-ball and his future remains with the white-ball. As far as his future plans are concerned, Wills doesn’t like to think about too far ahead and just wants to take one step at a time.
