For the love of Chennai

Cricket in India is not just a sport; it is an emotion which is revered like religion. When IPL started, nobody knew that the concept of Indian Premier League is going to become a phenomenon worldwide. The journey that began in 2007 has never failed to give its audience a roller-coaster ride.

From high voltage on-field exhilaration to off-field controversies, IPL has always remained nub of audience attention. A similar blow that fans suffered two years ago when one of the cult clubs Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was suspended for two years.

But as the saying goes, “The more you force, the fiercer they get, lions are not meant to be tamed.” Stars have aligned in favour of CSK again and Lions in Yellow Jersey are back to nudge you with nostalgia. So, is MSD! You would again be able to cheer for ‘Thala’ as he is back to the team where his heart has always been.

Speaking at a promotional event in Chennai, Dhoni said, “Lot of people have approached me, I can tell you that.” “I can’t ever think of not coming back to CSK. It’s because of many things- what we have been through, how we have conducted ourselves, how the management has been, how the players have been, how the fans have been,” he added.

A guy from the rustic city of Jharkhand went to represent the Tamil bastion of Chennai and has adopted the city and its fans just like his own.

When Chennai got suspended for two years, Dhoni represented Pune Warriors. When media poked him about his move, he spoke candidly, “If you want me to be politically correct, that is not how I am. After eight years of IPL, it feels different to play for any other team. If you want me to say that I am very excited to play for a new team, don’t give credit to CSK and the fans for the love and affection they have given us, it will be wrong.”

It isn’t just about how many titles you win; it’s about how you feel after winning them, Dhoni said. He would like losing after battling really hard, rather than playing and winning for another franchise and other team.

Dhoni tried to render his best for Pune franchise, but things didn’t quite work out well.

Chennai and Dhoni have some ‘Kismat Konnection’. He hasn’t just played his best IPL innings at Chennai; his remarkable Test innings also came at the same ground. Cricket fans still cherish his 224 at Chennai against Australia in 2013.

There is a lot of excitement and thrill that IPL begets every year but having ‘Mahi’s Magic’ back would certainly make us ‘whistle’.
