Marco hasn’t made his debut for the South African Cricket Team but has already made waves because of his all-round abilities. The 20-year old has a nice seam position and can swing the new ball. Six feet 8 inches tall, Marco can extract bounce from any surface and can whack huge sixes while batting at lower down the order. The young South African cricketer certainly has a bright future ahead of him.

Marco Jansen was born on 1st May 2000 in Klerksdorp, situated in the North West Province of South Africa. His twin brother, Duan Jansen too is a cricketer. He is also counted as one of the bright stars in South African cricket. He currently plays for Free State in domestic cricket.

Marco’s father, Koos Jansen is a former Rugby player, who played for Free State Cheetahs. Koos saw his son’s cricketing prowess when he was just 9 years old during an under-9s school game.

“Marco opened the batting. It was small boys, so they were playing only 20 overs each, and he scored 164 not out,” Koos remembers. “And Duan came in at No. 4 and scored over 80. I realised that for a little boy of nine years old to concentrate for 20 overs and score 164, he’s got to have a special talent; both of them. So I explored that.” Marco’s father was quoted as saying in ESPN Cricinfo.

The world heard about Jensen for the first time during India’s 2017 tour of South Africa. A 17-year old Marco Jansen was invited along with his brother by team India as a net bowler at the Wanderers. The left-arm seamer beat Virat Kohli three times in a row outside the off stump, exhibiting his class with the ball. Both the brothers impressed the Indian team and the duo ended the session by clicking a photo with Virat Kohli.

Marco Jansen made his List-A debut for North West in the 2017-18 CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge on 8th April 2018. His first-class debut game a year later. He played his debut first-class match for North West in the 2018-19 CSA 3-Day Cup on 11th October 2018. He ended up as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, claiming 27 wickets in 6 games.

Impressive performances in his debut first-class season meant Marco Jansen was included in South Africa’s under-19 squad in January 2019.

Until now, Marco has played 14 matches in first-class cricket, taking 54 wickets at an average of 20.51. He has also played 13 List-A games in which he has managed to pick 16 wickets at an average of 28.06.

His T20 debut came during the 2018-19 CSA T20 Challenge on 28th April 2019. Durban Heat signed him up as a new addition ahead of the 2019 Mzansi Super Lague,

Marco Jansen’s one of the biggest moments in his career arrived when he was included in South Africa’s squad for the tour to Pakistan in January 2021. He couldn’t make his debut but got the chance to share the dressing rooms with some of the modern-day greats.
