A tall and lanky fast-bowler who could hit big hits, Kyle Jamieson was perhaps destined to become a successful cricketer. Born and brought up in Auckland, Kyle Jamieson loved cricket and basketball in equal measure during his early days. He used to play both sports with immense passion. However, he knew that one day he had to give up on one out of them.

At 11 years of age, Jamieson decided to choose cricket as his calling and saw a dream of wearing the Blackcap one day. Jamieson used to open the batting and take the new ball during that time. His father, who was obviously delighted with the idea had a precious piece of advice for him.

“So I told him one day, I’m happy to help you. I’m happy to come and throw balls in the nets. If you never made the Black Caps, it wasn’t going to be due to lack of trying. If you weren’t good enough that’s fine but wasn’t going to be because you hadn’t done the hard work,” Jamieson was quoted as saying in Indian Express.

His school, named Auckland Grammar School, gave him the needed exposure to make rapid strides in the game. He was a consistent performer at school. He was the leading run scorer for them for three successive years. Owing to his belligerent batting display at age-group cricket, Jamieson was also included in New Zealand’s side for the under-19 World Cup in 2014.

However, he flopped with the bat. What attracted eyeballs, however, was his bowling. The 6 feet 8 inches fast bowler made full use of his height and extracted a lot of bounce and movement out of the surfaces. He took 7 wickets in 4 games for New Zealand.

Shift from Auckland to Canterbury: Consistent performers at the age-group cricket helped him receive a sports scholarship with the Lincoln University at the age of 18. For five long years, he played under the guidance of Gary Stead, who is now New Zealand’s current cricket team head coach.

In the year 2014, the big moment arrived when he made his List-A cricket debut for Canterbury. And, it took one more year for him to play his debut first-class match. Standing at 6 foot and 8 inches, he made heads turn due to the amount of bounce and movement he generated. Also, he was lethal whenever he got the opportunity with the bat.

He played for Canterbury from 2014 till 2019, before he moved back to his birthplace. He represented Auckland in the 2019-20 season. He has played 34 first-class games and has scored 773 runs at an average of 21.47. Besides, he has 128 wickets to his name at a bowling average of 21.14.

Jamieson international debut wasn’t one to forget. He made his ODI debut in the second ODI against India in 2020. He exhibited his batting skills in his debut ODI after stitching a crucial 76-run stand with Ross Taylor for the ninth wicket. He scored an unbeaten 25-run knock off 24 balls. It was followed by a notable bowling performance, ending the figures of 2 for 42. He also earned the Man of the Match performance in his debut match.

It won’t be wrong to say that Kyle Jamieson so far had a dream run in Test cricket. He made headlines in his debut Test series against India. He was the third-highest wicket-taker, picking 9 wickets in just 2 Tests at an average of 16.33. In his Test career, he has picked 36 wickets in 6 games at an average of 13.28.
