John Simpson is a left handed batsman and wicketkeeper. Batting lower down the order in County cricket for Middlesex, Simpson has scored over 7000 runs in his first-class career which is a remarkable achievement. At 32, the chances of an England call-up were dwindling day by day. But the absence of several first-choice players opened the door for Simpson and he earned a well deserved selection for Pakistan series.

England Wicketkeeper
England has a no. of world-class wicketkeepers in their ranks. With Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and Sam Billings unavailable, Simpson can make it count through his performances. But it won’t be an easy job for him to make his case in the playing eleven. Other than John Simpson, Phil Salt and Ben Duckett will be fighting for the wicketkeeper’s slot. Simpson’s experience at the domestic level can work in his favour.
Simpson made his first-class debut for Middlesex way back in 2009. He scored an excellent 87 and top scored for his team. His batting lower down the order helped his team get out of many difficult situations. Simpson’s century against Hampshire helped Middlesex win the County Championship title after 23 years. Not only in County cricket, Simpson showed his ability in the List A circuit too. He score runs at an impressive strike rate of 86 and played the finisher’s role to perfection.
John Simpson was also a part of England squad for 2006 Under-19 World Cup. His name has been there for the international call-up for a long time but his average hovering around 32 hasn’t helped his cause, especially with England having a wealth of wicketkeeping options.
