Glenn Phillips, a wicket-keeper batsman used to be a cricket-focused kid right from his young days with an aggressive batting style that drew comparisons with Brendon McCullum. Representing New Zealand in 2016 Under 19 World Cup he impressed everyone with his quick run-scoring abilities. The South African born batsman came into national prominence when he topped the run charts in the 2016/17 Super Smash season. Playing for Auckland Aces he was in imperious hitting form scoring 369 runs at 46.12 with an SR of 143.62.
It proved to be a breakthrough season for him as he was called up to the national squad after an injury to M Guptill making his T20I debut against South Africa in 2017. He hasn’t been able to replicate his domestic form at the international level as he managed to score only one fifty from his first 11 innings. A cricketing geek and a thinker who isn’t afraid to experiment with his technique was in good form for the New Zealand A side in red ball cricket with his best performance coming against the England side in 2019 when he scored a beautiful 116 against the likes of Archer, Broad ans Stokes. He soon made his test debut against Australia in 2020 and managed to score a fifty after a rushed call-up to the side owing to the illness of Williamson and Nicholls. His batting technique in that test was quite similar to Steve Smith with his bat lift coming from the gully region.
