As she got married to a star sportsperson celebrity, her life changed drastically after married to Laxman. Laxman shared in an interview that “She could have easily owned, established and run a successful software company. She was a very good student, passed MCA with distinction and had a lot of aspirations. And then, she married VVS Laxman”.
It was not just Sailaja giving up her aspirations but also the sacrifices she made for VVS so that he could concentrate on his career, which makes him really proud of his wife.
“The nature of my profession is such that I’m always travelling. So, the first sacrifice she made was agreeing to travel with me wherever I went. It was actually the first request I ever made to my wife, and she accepted it. I must say it’s very tough. A lot of people think that being a cricketer is easy, you live the glamorous life, and the wives get to travel to the best places of the world and stay at the best hotels. But it’s not a stable life. One day, you are in Bangalore, another day in Delhi, the next day you’re in Melbourne and then Dubai. It was not easy, but she traveled with me even when my son was born!” And with children came other responsibilities, like taking care of them while VVS admits to being the absentee parent. “After Achinthya, she cut down on travels with me, but then she had two kids to look after. The second sacrifice she made was bringing them up as a single parent. As a husband and father, I was never there. Sailaja did everything for them with a smile on her face, because she wanted to make sure that I don’t compromise on my profession. She knows how passionate I am about cricket and about representing the country. I am lucky to have a wife I always dreamt of having,” said the former cricketer, who is now enjoying a new innings of his life with family.
She is the director of ‘VVS Foundation’ founded by her husband in 2012. The foundations works to improve the lives of under privileged children and catalyze socio economic change in India. It raises money through donations from individuals and corporate sponsorship’s, and sponsors the education of meritorious students who dropout from schools due to financial constraints. Similarly, it sponsors financially constrained students who are good in sports to take up proper coaching. They are given sports coaching and secular education through the Foundation.
Sailaja’s bio on the foundation’s website http://vvsfoundation.org/ describes her as follows- “Mrs. Sailaja Laxman, a philanthropist by nature, is very passionate about education. She personally feels that if proper education and guidance is given to students coming from economically weaker section of the society, they can shine. She has been a great admirer of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, who was an icon for all generations and sections of the society and who advocated education to be the critical tool for a developed nation.”

Sailaja shares that she is very proud of her husband’s achievements and his love for the game and to represent his country. She also called cricket his ‘first wife’ around the time when Laxman announced his early retirement.
Sailaja shared in an interview that Laxman’s grand-father late Jagannadha Sastry Garu breathed, preached and lived Bhagwad Gita.
