Finn Allen was added to New Zealand’s squad on the back of his sensational performance in the 2020-21 Super Smash T20 tournament. From not getting enough chances to play for his domestic side to represent the country in a T20 international, Finn Allen’s journey is an inspiration to many.
Finn Allen was born on 22nd April 1999 in Auckland. He did his schooling from Saint Kentigern College, Auckland. He took the usual route of age-level cricket to rise through the ranks and soon found himself playing in Auckland’s under-17 team. He was later added to the under-19 team as well.
Impressive performance for the state side helped him getting included in New Zealand’s under-19 side. Finn Allen was part of New Zealand’s squad for the Under-19 World Cup in 2015. He, in fact, played the under-19 World Cup twice in his career. He made headlines in the 2017 Under-19 World Cup. Finn smashed a brilliant century against West Indies. Besides, he scored 90 runs against Kenya and an 87-run knock against England.

Finn Allen made his way into Auckland’s T20 side in 2017. He made his T20 debut for Auckland came against Central District on 3rd June 2017. On 17th February 2018, he made his List-A debut for Auckland in the Ford Trophy. In the same year, he got the chance to make his debut in first-class cricket. He scored 20 and 16 runs in the first and second innings respectively. Unfortunately, the talented New Zealander couldn’t get a lot of opportunities in his initial years. For the first three years, he could only get to play 21 matches across formats.
Finn Allen, understandably, decided to move to Wellington to get more game time. The head coach, Glenn Pocknall” didn’t hesitate one bit in having Allen’s services for Wellington.
“I didn’t think Wellington would be interested in me at all, given the number of good players they’ve got. I sort of thought: ‘Wow! How am I going to fit into this side?’ He called me and said he thought I was a good player and he was keen to have me at Wellington. I was pretty excited by that and within the next few days Glenn called again to give a ranking and I could see where I stood within the side. I took a bit of time to think, spoke to Auckland, and took the decision a few weeks later.”
In the year 2020, Allen began playing for Wellington to pursue his domestic cricket career. Recently, he turned heads after exhibiting a stellar performance in the 2020-21 Super Smash T20 tournament. He amassed 512 runs in 11 matches at an average of 56.88 and a strike rate of 193.93, helping Firebirds to win the title. A day after the final, he was included in New Zealand’s T20 squad as a standby player.
