Chetan Sakariya IPL
For a guy whose father is bedridden due to several injuries and brother committed suicide a few months back, the IPL contract came as a big boost to his cricketing ambitions. The contract would now perhaps end all the problems the family had been going through all this while.
Hailing from a Vartej, a small town ten kilometres west of Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district, Chetan dared to dream of becoming a top-level cricketer despite not having the money to buy even a pair of spikes to train on the cricket field.
His father, who was a lorry driver, wasn’t in favour of supporting Chetan’s ambitions. For someone who drove rikshaw and the only breadwinner in the family, his decision was perhaps understandable. But, Chetan was adamant. He wanted to show the world what he was capable of and set examples to millions like him who are dreaming of a similar fate.
“They used to say cricket is rich people’s sport, one needs connections, there’s no future for us here,” Sakariya said in an interview with ESPN Cricinfo.
On numerous occasions, Sakaria would lie to his parents to play the game until his maternal uncle came into the picture. For Sakariya, his uncle has been one of the biggest support systems in his life.
“My uncle is a distributor of stationery products in Bhavnagar. He taught me how to do billing etc on a computer. He told me he would take care of my tuition fee and will also let me play if I could help a little bit in his business.”
Cricket Career & Glenn McGrath
Once he was representing his school in a district-level competition. The coach of the popular Sir Bhavsinhji Cricket Academy, Rajendra Gohil saw the potential in him and told him to join the academy. Years later, he was selected to play for the Under-16 team. Since then till now, Sakaria has been hit with numerous injuries. But the fighter in Sakaria came back stronger every time he hit a roadblock in his career.
Impressive performance at age-group cricket meant Sakaria was selected in Saurashtra’s under-19 team. He impressed one and all in the Cooch Behar Trophy. He claimed 18 wickets in 6 games, including a five-for against Karnataka. His performances led him to get enrolled in MRF Pace Foundation.
“I gave trials and impressed Glenn [McGrath] sir with my nippy pace and natural swing. He told me if I worked on my action and fitness, I could add another 5kph to my pace and be a 130kph bowler. He said if I could do that, I could at least play at the Ranji Trophy level.” Said Chetan.

Chetan Sakariya Brother
When Chetan Sakariya was playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021, his younger brother committed suicide. In spite of that, his family didn’t inform him about the tragic incident for 10 days so that his game won’t get hampered. Every time Chetan would ask about his brother’s whereabouts, they would quickly change the topic. When Chetan finally got to know about his brother’s death, he didn’t speak to his family for a week.
“I hope nobody goes through the pain and struggles we went through. My second child, a son who was a year younger to Chetan, committed suicide a month ago. Chetan was playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy at that time, which he finished as the sixth-highest wicket-taker. We didn’t inform him about his brother’s death for the first 10 days as we didn’t want his game to be affected. All we told him was that his father wasn’t keeping well.”Chetan Sakariya’s mother said in an interview with Around the Wicket.”
