Benny Howell is an English all-rounder who plays for Gloucestershire at the domestic level. Born on 5 October 1988 in Bordeaux but educated at Oxfordshire with the UK and Australian passports, Howell bats right-handed and bowls medium-pace, and has a reputation of being one of the most skillful and innovative cricketers in T20 cricket.

Howell initially played for Hampshire before making his switch to Gloucestershire (since 2012). He debuted in List A in the 2010-11 edition of Clydesdale Bank 40 tournament, and in the same season, he debuted into the T20s in the Caribbean T20. His First Class debut was during the 2011 edition of the County Championship Division One.

In addition to English domestic cricket, Howell has been a part of T20 franchises, namely Khulna Titans (2016-17), Rangpur Riders (2019), Melbourne Renegades (2020-21), Birmingham Phoenix (2021) and Chattogram Challengers (2022).

In English cricket, his first hundred was in a List A match against Surrey in the 2011 edition of Clydesdale Bank 40, where he struck 122 of 113 deliveries. He eventually finished as the leading run-getter for Hampshire in that edition, compiling 340 runs in 11 matches while averaging 56.66 and striking in excess of 90. The all-rounder’s heroics led to him being a part of the First Class team for the Hampshire, and he didn’t fail to impress in his debut game against the Lancashire, where he struck a gritty 71 in the second innings. However, more than the List A and First Class, Howell has garnered a reputation as a T20 specialist, with a forte at bowling slower deliveries for which he holds 50 variations.

Howell was the highest wicket taker for Gloucestershire in the 2016 edition of the Natwest T20 Blast, as he picked 24 scalps at an average of 16.04. In the inaugural edition of The Hundred in 2021, Howell was a part of the Birmingham Phoenix, and yet again, the right-armer impressed throughout the tournament by aggregating 11 wickets at an economy of 7.20 and an average of 18.54.

Howell had a good run in the BPL 2022 as well, where he played for the Chattogram Challengers and amassed 207 runs in 12 innings while striking in excess of 150, plus he picked 4 wickets at an economy of 7.90. Fortunately for the all-rounder, his terrific run in the Bangladesh T20s coincided with the dates of the IPL 2022 auction, wherein he was handed his first contract in the cash-rich tournament by Lucknow Super Giants.

The Bordeaux-born all-rounders’ contributions in the shortest format got him an IPL contract with the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2022 auction at his base price of 40 lakhs. His experience and expertise in limited-overs is likely to aid the franchise in the next few seasons.
