Baltej Singh is a tall and well built Ludhiana-born medium-pacer who relies on his seam and bounce to scalp wickets. He has more than a decade’s experience in domestic cricket, having made his First Class debut against Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy 2011-12.

Son of a farmer, Baltej had to toil hard even before he could make a name for himself in the domestic arena. Opportunities dried up for the right-armer, who had to wait a few years before making his debut in List A and T20, which happened during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons respectively.
In fact, everyday travel from his village to Ludhiana to train at the Ludhiana District Cricket Academy had adversely affected his routine and finances. Yet, his persistence eventually paid off when he showcased his fine-tuned skillset in the Cooch Behar Trophy and Col CK Nayudu tournament to become a stand-by player in the India U-19 team for the 2010 World Cup, which was followed by his entry into domestic cricket.

Since making his Ranji debut in 2011, Baltej has played only 14 First Class matches where has picked 37 wickets while being in and out of the Punjab cricket team. He got a long run in the Ranji Trophy 2019-20, where he finished with one of the best economies for his side (2.38) and averaged 19.50 to finish the season with 20 wickets across 6 matches, with best figures of 4/64 against Gujarat. His best run in List A cricket was during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2016-17, where he pocketed 7 wickets in 3 matches while averaging a miserly 17.28 and maintaining an economy of 5.07 throughout. Unfortunately, that was the last time he participated in the domestic 50-overs, and hasn’t played any List A cricket since then. In spite of being an adept bowler and lauded for the same by Australian legend Glenn McGrath at the MRF Pace Foundation, Baltej couldn’t find many opportunities as an active player in Punjab’s line-up. However, the door finally opened for the Ludhiana-born in the IPL 2022 auction.
