Achinta Sheuli like many other successful athletes was India’s gem at the 2022 Commonwealth Games as he lifted Gold in the 73 kg category of the weightlifting. Sheuli at the age of 20 lived up to expectations as he fought against tough situation to reach the road of success.

Sheuli belongs to lower-middle class family and would often be challenged by situation. Inspired by his brother Alok, it was in 2011 when Achinta took first steps in the sports. Soon after his father’s death, it was his brother that gave away education and helped Achinta develop as a weightlifter. Achinta helped his mother and brother in their embroidery work that called for precision, even as he was training for weightlifting.

Career

Achinta won the Commonwealth Games Gold medal in 2022 by lifting a record 143 kg in snatch (Games Record & equal to his previous personal best) and 170 kg in clean & jerk. The lift equaled his previous national record.

However, his career didn’t have the easiest of the way as he had to fight tough competitor both and and off the mat. Competing in the 73 kg category, Achinta first roused to prominence in 2013. He won the Junior National level weightlifting tournament in 2013 for 50 kg weight category, This enabled him to enter the Army Sports institute in 2014.

Achinta’s first real success came in 2019 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships as he clinched Gold in the 73 kg category. The tournament was held in Apia. This success was followed by another Gold medal in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in 2021, this time held in Tashkent.

While there was success in terms of Gold for Achinta, he would end as second best at the Junior World Weightlifting Championships in 2021. Achinta clinched Silver for India, but still made the nation proud.
