Zak Crawley has an open stance with a still head, a slight forward press and weaves his magic from there. Known for his patience and work ethic in the cricketing circles, Zak has been part of the Kent County team since his young days representing them in all age-group cricket.

Crawley made his List A debut for Kent in the 2017 Royal London One-Day Cup and started his first-class career for them as a middle-order batsman. After some impressive showings with the bat in the Regional Super50 competition held in West Indies, Zak Crawley was promoted to the opening spot in the red ball games. He responded well by scoring 755 and 820 runs in the 2018 and 2019 County Championship respectively albeit at a middling average in the low 30’s but displayed immense potential with the bat.

With a temperament that belies his age and a constant thirst to improve, Zak Crawley would frequently visit Australia to work with Noddy Holder, a renowned batting coach in Perth and has also paid his expenses to attend some spin camps in Mumbai, India. His white-ball batting skills came into light when he scored a 100 off 42 balls in the NSW Premier Cricket in Sydney. He had a good 2019 T20 Vitality Blast season too scoring 307 at SR of 144.81 and was signed by London Spirit in the now postponed Hundred.

England career

He started the 2019 summer with a gritty 43 for England Lions against a strong Australia A team which put him on the selector’s radar. With England struggling to fill the opening spot since the retirement of A Strauss, Z Crawley and D Sibley got their call-ups to the national squad for the New Zealand tour. After making his test debut against New Zealand in Hamilton, Crawley got an opportunity to bat at the opening spot in South Africa with the regular opener, Rory Burns missing out due to an injury. Despite making some good starts, he failed to convert those into a substantial knock ending the series with a personal best of 66.

Zak Crawley played his first home test against Windies in 2020 and scored a well made 76 in the second innings of the test at Southampton. His biggest breakthrough has come in the current series against Pakistan where he followed his 53 in the second test with a brilliant 267 at Southampton. The way he countered the Pakistani pacers in helpful conditions by often playing late with an open stance and unleashing the range of shots in his repertoire once set was a sight to behold. With a solid back-foot play and the willingness to learn, Zak Crawley is a definite shoo-in to succeed in the Ashes at Australia. England would hope for him to perform and serve them like this for the years to come.
