He brought up his century in just 37 balls and with that, entered his name in the record books. It is now the second-fastest century after Rishabh Pant’s 32-ball century in the history of Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Azharuddeen’s whirlwind knock received praise from across the country. Numerous cricket pundits lauded his efforts, calling him a rising star for India. Born on 22nd March 1994, Mohammed Azharuddeen comes from the Kasaragod district in Kerala. His parents initially thought of naming him Ajmal. However, his elder brother being a fan of former Indian skipper, Mohammad Azharuddin, decided to name his younger brother after him. Interestingly, when Azharuddeen was born, his namesake and former Indian skipper, Mohammad Azharuddin was leading Indian Cricket Team in New Zealand.
The Kerala cricketer was trained at Kerala Cricket Association’s college Academy. After impressing in the age-group cricket, Azharuddeen was drafted in the under-19 team. Consistent performances in the u-19 and U-23 circuits meant he was soon included in Kerala’s domestic cricket team.
Mohammed Azharuddeen made his first-class cricket debut for Kerala on 15th September 2015. He played his debut first-class game against Goa in the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy. On 20th December 2015, he played his first List A game in the 2015-16 Vijay Hazare Trophy. His T20 debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy came on 2nd January 2016.
In 22 first-class matches, he has amassed 959 runs at an average of 24. Looking at his T20 numbers, Azharuddeen has scored 404 runs in 22 T20s. If his domestic cricket numbers are anything to go by, the Kerala batsman certainly has a great future ahead of him.
