Manpreet Singh Hockey: Captain of the Indian hockey team, Manpreet Singh plays in the halfback position. Great pace and agility are his key attributes. Tokyo is going to be his third Olympics. In 2014, Asian Hockey Federation gave him the Junior Player of the Year title. Manpreet is also an Arjuna awardee (2018). He idolizes Moritz Furste and Sardar Singh for their style of play.

Manpreet Singh Hockey
He was inspired to take up the sport by Pargat Singh, former India hockey captain who led the side in the 1992 Barcelona and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. After facing some resistance from his family at an early age, Manpreet started learning his trade at the Surjit Hockey Academy at Jalandhar in 2005. He has never looked back since joining the academy and his star has been steadily on the rise. He made his debut for the junior national team in 2011 and was part of the squad for the 2012 Olympics.

Manpreet has been leading the side since May 2017. He has a great temperament and was always tailor-made for the role. Although optimistic about his team’s chances in Tokyo, he mentioned that they would have liked more practice. In a statement issued by Hockey India, Manpreet said, “I am humbled to have this opportunity of representing India at the Olympics for the third time, this time as team Captain. It is a very proud moment for me to be given this charge.”
Manpreet Singh Wife
Singh married Illi Najwa Saddique in December 2020. She is a Malaysian of Pakistani descent. The couple first met in 2012 after a hockey game in a major tournament held in Malaysia.
