Basra was born on 13 March 1984 in Cosham city in Portsmouth on the south coast of England, to Punjabi Indian parents. She has two siblings- a sister named Ruby and a younger brother, Rahul.
Her parents Rakesh and Praveen Basra have owned a shop there since the early 1990s. As far as schooling is concerned, she studied at a small all-girls school by the name of Mayville High School, in Southsea. She then went on to study IT, psychology, sociology, and English language at South Downs College. She was studying and had plans to become a criminal psychologist, however, dropped the thought when she finally decided to enter the entertainment industry.

Basra had to work her way in the industry starting building contacts along with perfecting her Hindi language and polishing her accent. This sure took her some three years. Since her Hindi was still not so fluent initially, her career got a start with the infamous NRI from abroad type of roles.
After about three years of struggle, she finally debuted with the Emraan Hashmi starrer Dil Diya Hai in 2006 whereby she also got the opportunity to work alongside veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty. Next, she was seen in The Train in 2007, again starring opposite her Dil Diya Hai co-actor Emraan Hashmi. Here she played Roma, a woman who ends up getting involved in an extramarital affair. This proved to be a breakthrough role for her which bagged in many eyes as well as other films.
Basra also starred in several music videos. She was featured in the song “Ghum Sum Ghum Sum” for Sukhvinder Shinda and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.
Geeta has stated in several interviews that she has always felt comfortable in Bollywood industry which embraced her with open arms.
Basra was not new to stardom. She had worked hard and patiently earned her faithful fan base. Therefore, her marriage to the star Sikh of the Indian Cricket team only went on to increase her popularity.
