The Greatest Royal Rumble Match Card Ranking
Published on: Apr 26, 2018 6:50 pm IST|Updated on: Apr 26, 2018 6:50 pm IST
The biggest event in the Middle East by the WWE is to held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and is called the Greatest Royal Rumble. This is the first time the WWE has held a huge event with a wide list of matches and titles on the line just a few weeks after Wrestlemania. This is the first big step by the WWE in setting a footing in the Middle East.
The biggest attraction is the first ever 50 man Royal Rumble. Not only will this be a first for the WWE but also big names such as Chris Jericho, The Undertaker, Kurt Angle and HHH are amongst the few who will be performing matches at the event.
There are 10 matches scheduled for the event with many titles on the line. Here is a look at the match card for the event and how I would rank them:
#10 Cedric Alexander vs Kalisto for the Cruiserweight Title
I’m sorry to say but whenever a 205 Live match will be scheduled for any event, it’ll be ranked last. It’s not like I don’t like the division but its cause the storylines are week and the only redeeming factor is the high flying, acrobatic action.
At Wrestlemania 34 Cedric Alexander won the Cruiserweight title in the finals of the tournament against Mustafa Ali. Kalisto lost the title to Enzo Amore at TLC 2017 and hasn’t been a part of any important storyline since.
The match will be a great kick off the show as the high flying action will get the audience pumped. The two men are exceptional and proven to be talented athletes.
#9 Jeff Hardy vs Jinder Mahal for the United States Title
Jinder Mahal had won the Title at Wrestlemania 34 only to lose it on his first night on Monday Night Raw to Jeff Hardy in the opening segment of the show. Even though Jinder Mahal has shown a lot of improvement in his mic and in-ring performance, he is still not the best person to have the title on.
Jeff Hardy who is now on the Smackdown Live brand will definitely take the title to new heights and will add weight to it. He is loved by millions and is a great performer. Even as a mid-carder he is still a huge draw and can put on great matches.
Since the start of 2018, the US Title has changed hands 4 times and now it’s time for someone like Jeff to hold on to the title for a long time and bring some credibility to it.
#8 The Bludgeon Brothers vs The Usos for the Smackdown Tag Team Title
The Bludgeon Brothers winning the Smackdown Tag Team Titles was a big surprise at Wrestlemania 34 and their rivalry with the entire Tag Team division has been quite impressive. Putting on a Brothers of Destruction like a gimmick, Harper and Rowan look really strong and menacing in their roles as the Bludgeon Brothers.
The Usos have always been great in every match. Their speed and high flying skills have always been centrepieces of their matches. Since the last two weeks, each Uso got a chance to face each Bludgeon Brother. In their last two matches, Naomi has joined in helping the Usos.
The match between these two teams will definitely be awesome and given proper booking and time might even steal the show.
#7 Seth Rollins vs The Miz vs Finn Balor vs Samoa Joe in a Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Title
This feels like a rematch with the addition of Samoa Joe but considering the amazing, show-stealing match they had at Wrestlemania 34, this match is a huge welcome. We saw how Miz, Rollins, and Balor had excellent chemistry with each other. We know how good a worker Samoa Joe is. Throw in the stipulation of this being a Ladder match and we have a highly anticipated and without a shadow of a doubt great match.
WWE can keep Rollins as the Champion or hand the tile over to Balor. Balor will definitely bring weight to the title. Miz will also be a great choice and will lead to a chance to see Daniel Bryan as the champion when they feud on Smackdown Live.
I’m sure they will keep Samoa Joe free from any title so that he can chase the Raw Championship or the Universal Championship.
#6 Triple H vs John Cena
The most pointless and only there for fan service match on the card. There was no build up, no storyline, nothing. Regardless of who wins this match, it will not affect the normal program.
This match is just for the fans to see two legends facing off. After Wrestlemania 34 and losing to Undertaker there has been no build up or story about John overcoming the loss.
Rumors have it that John will be facing the Undertaker again at Wrestlemania 35. HHH is rumored to be facing Kurt Angle at Summerslam.
#5 Cesaro and Sheamus vs. ‘Woken’ Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt for the RAW Tag Team Title
Wrestlemania 34 proved to be the foundation for quite a lot new changes to the Tag team division. The sudden unity of ‘Woken’ Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt at during the Andre the Giant Royal Rumble and the sudden surprising win of Braun Strowman and Nicholas.
When Braun surrendered the Tag Team Tile on the night after Wrestlemania 34, this opened the door for a tournament to find new champions for the title. The last match to see who will win the RAW Tag Team Titles will be Matt Hardy and Bray Wyatt vs The Bar.
#4 The Undertaker vs Rusev in a Casket Match
Just like Cena vs HHH, this is another fan service match with no build up or story behind it. Though both men are amazing performers with Undertaker a legend and Rusev being the most over wrestler on the roster, the outcome is easily predictable.
Continuing his squash winning streak since Wrestlemania 34 against John Cena, the Undertaker is sure to win. We hope the WWE doesn’t completely destroy Rusev under a minute and keeps the match at least 5-8 minutes long if not 10. The winner of this match will not have any impact on the main storylines.
#3 AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Title
Starting this rivalry from Wrestlemania 34, AJ and Nakamura have made all fans’ dreams come true by delivering spectacular match after match after match. At Wrestlemania 34, AJ had won and retained the WWE title only for Nakamura to turn heel and hit him with a Low Blow.
During the past few weeks, this animosity has only grown to be bitterer as seen in their last encounter in the 6 man Tag Team match. The King of Strong Style has grown his character from a babyface to as sadistic sore loser who wants the championship and does not speak English.
Even if the title changes hands at the Greatest Royal Rumble, this feud has the potential to last a year. The match should be around 20-30 minutes long so that both men can be booked strong.
#2 Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns in a Steel Cage Match for the Universal Title
After the flop of a match at Wrestlemania 34, Brock and Roman are facing off again for the Universal Championship but this time inside a steel cage. This will definitely be the main event of the evening and be placed at the near end of the show if not the last match of the night.
If the rumors are to be believed that Brock will be leaving the WWE for UFC then this could be the match where Roman finally wins the Universal Championship. Regardless, both men need to bring their A game and put on an incredible match unlike the one at Wrestlemania.
Being inside a steel cage opens many opportunities for amazing and hard spots. Both men need to take them into account and not make this another suplex after suplex after suplex fest.
#1 The 50 Man Royal Rumble Match
The biggest Royal Rumble event for the WWE, 50 men competing in a Royal Rumble match. Though this is the third Royal Rumble match in just three months of 2018. Anybody who has been a fan of the Royal Rumble match will tell you it’s chaos from the start.
We all know the match is going to be full of surprise entrances and sudden returns. The match will be a riot of bodies flying left and right till the last 10 men are left in the ring. In order for the fans to see anything in this sea of bodies, the eliminations need to be super fast otherwise this will be useless.
The WWE is taking a huge risk here with 50 men in one ring. The Royal Rumble match, in any event, has always been seen as a fun and just a filler match. If the WWE wants to reap the benefits of this huge event they need to feature the winner in some major storyline.
It is already known that names such as Daniel Bryan, Chris Jericho, Braun Strowman etc will be in the Royal Rumble match.
