Every match at Wrestlemania is a well planned and well crafted but that doesn’t make the match great, epic or memorable. What does is the wrestlers who compete and the performance they give. One of the most anticipated matches of any Wrestlemania show is the main title, that is either the Raw Championship belt, Smackdown Championship belt or the Universal Championship belt. Previously it was the World Heavy Weight Championship belt.
Here are the best and most epic WWE Championship matches that took place at Wrestlemania:
#5 Rey Mysterio vs Randy Orton vs Kurt Angle at Wrestlemania 22
In this match, Kurt was the World Heavy Weight Champion and was facing Rey and Randy for the belt. The match was a fest of the technical, aerial and great ring for from three very talented wrestlers.
The match saw amazing spots including Kurt hitting a suplex on Randy and Rey together, Kurt tossing Rey up and hitting Randy with a Hurricanrana off the top turnbuckle. The referee being pulled out to stop a pin. An RKO outta nowhere.
The match was won by Rey after hitting Randy with a 619.
#4 Batista vs the Undertaker at Wrestlemania 23
Batista walked into this match as the World Heavy Weight Champion facing the ‘Phenom’ for the title. This match saw to heavy less technical brawlers go at it. Batista who was all about brute strength vs the Undertaker who was about ‘old school wrestling’.
The match started out with a spear by Batista followed by him having the upper hand. Though the start had Batista looking strong, midway the Undertaker took charge. With high offense against Batista, the Undertaker had the match in his favor.
Even after a powerbomb through the announce table Batista couldn’t keep the Undertaker down. As said earlier this match was booked very well to have Batista look strong as even after ‘The Last Ride’ and a chokeslam, Batista still kicked out and hit Taker with a spear and the Batista Bomb.
The Undertaker won after hitting Batista with a Tombstone piledriver becoming the new champion.
#3 Daniel Bryan vs Randy Orton vs Batista at Wrestlemania 30
This was the most anticipated match of Wrestle 30 because of how well the story was written. After months of being harassed by The Authority, Daniel had finally got a chance to win the World Heavy Weight Championship.
Even though the odds were stacked against Bryan as he had to face Triple H at the start of the Wrestlemania show. The winner of this match would go on to face Orton vs Batista in a triple threat match at the end of the night.
Daniel not only defeated Triple H but also got Batista in the ‘Yes Hold’ to make him tap out to win. The perfect ending to the perfect underdog story.
#2 Undertaker vs Edge at Wrestlemania 24
After winning the title from Batista the year before, the Undertaker had to defend it at Wrestlemania 24. The match was intense as edge using his speed was able to counter almost every offense of the Undertaker.
Midway the referee was knocked out and Edge used this opportunity and hit the Undertaker with the title belt but wasn’t able to keep him down. Even after two spears the Undertaker kicked out and seeing his opening got Edge into his ‘Hell’s Gate’ submission hold that made Edge tap out.
#1 Shawn Michaels vs Triple H vs Chris Benoit at Wrestlemania 20
One of the few Triple Threat matches featured as the main event at Wrestlemania and the second on this list. Triple H was the Champion at the time.
The match was epic in every sense of the word. Benoit and Shawn were regarded as two of the best technical wrestlers at the time and Triple H was known for his strength and endurance.
The match ended with Benoit locking Triple H in the Crossface and making him tap. Benoit celebrated his victory with longtime best friend Eddie Guerrero post-match.
