Iceland held Argentineans, and they got humiliated by Croatia which could give them a shock before the round of 16. It is chocking for Lionel Messi’s Argentina as they have to wait for the results. They have to rely on Croatia which had already secured their position in the round of 16, if they win against Iceland and Argentina beats Nigeria then only Messi’s XI could reach the next level.
Everyone doubts the future of Argentina in the once-in-a-four-year tournament but their legendary captain Diego Maradona still believes that this Argentina world repeats the history of 1982 and 1990. They will defy all the obstacles to enrol in the round of 16 this year at any cost. In a statement, Maradona said, “It’s disturbing to see Argentina sitting rock bottom of the group with just one match to go. The task is difficult not only because a win is necessary. We also have to depend on the outcome of the Croatia-Iceland match. However, being a believer, I refuse to give up hope in La Albiceleste. The situation reminds me of 1982 and 1990. Defending champions both times, we had started with defeats. We won the remaining two matches on the first occasion before crashing out in the second round. In the second, when I was captain, we reached the final. Leaving aside the difference in where we finished eventually, I look at the fact that despite landing in a spot twice, we came out fighting and crossed the group hurdle. It gives me to believe this can be done.”
