Poland:
Poland must be proud of their efforts in China despite losing the quarter-final battle against Spain at Shanghai Oriental Sports Center. For this was their first appearance in the FIBA World Cup since 1967. And the growth can be seen by the fact that they are set to play in a 5-8 classification match against the Czech Republic.
Mike Taylor’s men topped their group following three wins at the first group stage, which was followed by a 79-74 win over Russia in the first game of the 2nd round stage.
Poland’s journey came to an end after a 78-90 defeat against Spain. But there are a lot of positives to take from the tournament for Mike Taylor as he looks to take the momentum back to the Olympic Qualifiers.
Czech Republic:
While the Czech Republic booked a spot in Basketball’s premier quadrennial tournament for the first time as an independent nation.
The opening game 67-88 defeat against the USA might have been an inescapable scenario, but the Czech raised their game against Japan and Turkey to qualify from Group E.
Ronen Ginzburg’s men then came against Brazil, a team which sits 12 places above them on the points table, in game-1 of the 2nd round, beating the South American team 93-71.
The Czechs needed not to lose the game by more than 12 points against Greece to qualify for the quarters, and they did as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Co. won by an 84-77 scoreline.
