Portland Trail Blazers host Los Angeles Lakers in NBA action at the Moda Center, in Portland on Friday.

Portland Trail Blazers:

There is a wide-held perception inside the NBA fraternity that after Los Angeles Lakers’ move for LeBron James from Cleveland Cavaliers in the off-season, they are at least expected to make the playoffs this season. Something this stories franchise haven’t achieved since they fired Mike Brown in 2012.

But one of the teams they are expected to replace in the West are none other than their opponent in the first game. Yes, the Portland Trail Blazers who were the 3rd best team of the regular season in the Western Conference and finished that campaign with 49-33 record, 7th best across both the conferences.

The problem with Blazers is their over-dependence on two players – Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum.

Lillard had his best points-per-game season in the 2017-18 campaign, while CJ McCollum racked up points at 21.4 points per game. That’s what undid their progress in the post-season as Lillard saw a drop in his performance and Pelicans did a clean sweep over them in the playoffs.

Also, Blazers have signed mostly fringe players in the off-season while teams in the West have only got better and better. Truth be told, they are in danger unless Lillard matches his performance of the last season.

Los Angeles Lakers:

With LeBron James comes a whole package of expectations. And after a good pre-season, things are finally looking good for this famous franchise.

But not everything is not as smooth as it seems. Lakers have been so poor and submissive in the last six seasons or so that there may be some psychological blocks affecting the players on the court.

Take for example the case of Trail Balzers, their first opponent of this new season. it’s been more than 4 years that Lakers defeated Blazers on a Basketball court. The losing streak now stands at 15 games and dates back to 2014 season. It’s a sign that Portland may have cracked Lakers in every conceivable manner and beating them in today’s game and at their own fortress, will take some doing from the visitors.

Also, LeBron is under tremendous pressure to take Lakers to the playoffs which haven’t been achieved since the 2012-13 season.

The 4-times MVP is certainly fighting on more fronts than only on Basketball court.

CJ McCollum – One of the standout performers for the Blazers last season. The 27-year-old racked was one of the two players in Portland Balzers to average in the 20s. A similar performance is expected from him in the 2018-19 campaign as well.

Damian Lillard – He has set the bar way too high even for himself. His average of 26.9 points per game season was the 4th best in NBA last season. Though expectations are sky-high from him, to be fair, matching those stats will take some doing from the man who has touched those lofty heights last year.

But for sure, Lillard is well capable of surpassing even that record and will definitely bt their best offensive player this season.

Los Angeles Lakers –

LeBron James – Golden State Warriors may have the most talented players in their ranks but LeBron James remains a class above than the rest. The four-time MVP is game’s biggest name these days and no-doubt he will be a future NBA Hall of Famer.

Kyle Kuzma – Lakers’ future star whose stellar performance of the last season should take another giant leap as Lebron will be standing beside him. The 23-year-old Power-Forward averaged 16.1 points per game last season which was the joint best for Lakers in the 2017-18 season.

Portland Trail Blazers: This department is almost empty for the home side at the start of this campaign. Only Gary Trent Jr. has been ruled out of this match due to his ongoing Quadriceps problems. He is expected to be back for the next game.

Los Angeles Lakers: Moe Wagner has recovered from a knee problem. But this game may have come too early for him, and may not be involved.
