Preview:
Argentina are one of the only two teams, with the other team being France, in the ongoing World Cup to head to the semifinals without losing a match.
Winning the group ahead of Russia, South Korea, and Nigeria was to some extent a surprising result, but to come unscathed from the next rounds with a 100% record, beating the likes of Poland and tournament favorite Serbia along the way, has been more than a shock.
To get a whip about the incredible achievement of Sergio Hernandez’s men in the tournament, which will still be a success irrespective of the result in the semi-final, one should know the fact that Argentina has no player on their roster playing for any team in the NBA.
In fact, this is the first time since the 2002 World Cup that a team reached the last four without having any player from the NBA.
One may argue that it’s the desire and the togetherness of the team has pushed the team beyond its capacities, while pointing towards the unfathomable short journey of both Serbia and the USA in the World Cup, still, the likes of Luis Scola and Facundo Campazzo are not naive at this level.
France, meanwhile, deserves to be here, all on their merits. It feels even more now after the World No-3 produced a real humdinger of a result, after pulling over the USA 89-79 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Rudy Gobert scored a double-double, 21 points, and 16 rebounds, while Evan Fournier ended up with a team-high 22 points.
This was France’s 5th win in 6 games at the World Cup, with their only loss coming against Australia in the last game of the 2nd round.
