Not a great start
While LeBron continued to thrive in all aspects and Anthony Davis had a big night too, the Lakers had a sour start to the season. Like last season, the Lakers didn’t receive strong defense and their three-guard starting rotation looked a bit iffy. Lonnie Walker IV had no rhythm, Patrick Beverley is still learning the system and despite an efficient night, Russell Westbrook couldn’t get a winning contribution. Kendrick Nunn keeps making case for extended minutes and I believe he should start instead of Lonnie Walker IV, who seems well suited coming fresh off-the-bench.

They had 23 assists and 21 turnovers which makes for a rather erratic night. Seriously, this opening game was in a way reflection of the last season. Some great numbers by individual players but the result is a blowout loss. This was an embarrassing start to the season, there is no doubt about that. Will LeBron have an answer when the action turns on against the Clippers? The biggest issue is their defense, they will need more from their off-guards. The current unit looks haphazard. They need to assign suitable minutes in my opinion.

Clippers: Exactly the type of team that can hurt the Lakers
The Clippers are in a great mood because they have their two-way Ace Kawhi Leonard back. It is unique to have two incredible two-way players who play elite defense in the form of Paul George and Kawhi Leonard to be together. They surely are similar in many ways but injuries have hampered the duo to thrive. One thing is for sure, a 70+ games season with both of these athletes translates to at least 50 wins. And the Clippers can fancy a top finish if John Wall gets it going. This on paper looks like a great complementary trio.

Wall’s ability to get in the paint and make passes, helps the case for Leonard and George, who will then be able to minimize iso opportunities and make sustainable cuts. Ivica Zubac can press the middle whereas Norman Powell, Reggie Jackson, Robert Covington, and Nicolas Batum in the bench must inspire confidence. The trouble is there are many players who need to create off-the-ball so the bench rotation players like Jackson and Powell may have to sacrifice touches and buy into the long-term success this season, both as a cover for injury and as productive bench players that make up one of the best benches in the league.
