A lot of expected from Peru in their opening match of Group C against Denmark. It was their appearance in the World Cup after 36 years and it all came down to a first half penalty which was missed by miles and everyone knew that Peru just dropped a golden chance of winning the opening game. However, they should learn from theirĀ mistake as they head to play France and Australia in their remaining two games.
Both the teams started with great enthusiasm as expected and there were plenty of attacks on both sides but none of the team had the mentality to take it to the finish line. The game was equally balanced when Denmark player William Kvist was taken out of the ground in a stretcher, letting Lasse Schone to replace him. The game was getting more physical for the Peru as Renato Tapia gave away a free kick to Denmark in the edge of their own penalty box. Denmark failed to gain advantage from that spot as the series of attacks are still going on both ends.
In the 45th minute, Peru won a penalty thanks to the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) decision and it was certain that Peru would take the lead before the first half is over. Christian Cueva took his time before he took the penalty and he struck the ball with all his force which flew over the goalpost by miles and became the first Peru player to miss a penalty in the World Cup.
The second half began half heartedly for Peru as they didn’t know how to progress further in the game to take a lead when specially Kasper Schmeichel was in a burning form. However on the 59th minute from a fantastic Eriksen cross Yussuf Poulsen, RB Leipzig’s forward, takes a shot from 10 yards out on the left that went under Gallese to end up in the back of the net. The combination Christian Eriksen and Yussuf Poulsen has worked once more Denmark as they took the lead on the favourites.
A few more substitutes are brought down by both the teams but the match ended Peru 0 – 1 Denmark.
