Spain clashed with Morocco in the either team’s third game at the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia. It was an important matchup played in Group B. Spain vs Morocco had a 2-2 final scoreline.
After two sets of games had been played every team of this group, it was evident that getting out this group was going to be a tough call.
Morocco has had the worst of luck in this tournament. It can be argued they have been the best team in this group. They got undone by an own goal against Iran and couldn’t use their domination over Portugal to get back in the game. When they faced Spain, the story was a bit different.
The African side is the most successful team from their continent in this tournament. They started this game against the former World Champions with an air of urgency.
Putting pressure on their European opponents, they were waiting for them to make a mistake so Morocco could capitalise on it.
In the 14th team, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Ramos had a mixup. Khalid Boutlaib pounced on the loose ball and ran at David de Gea only to pass the ball through his legs and in the goal. Morocco had scored their first goal since 1998. Spain was left shaken by this gafe, and wanted to get back in the game as soon as they could. They knew there was a chance that if they lose this game they might not make it out of the group.
Isco got the side level in the 19th minute of the game to take away some of the pressure from the side. If Portugal defeated Iran, Spain was safe if the scoreline remained the same.
However, Morocco had other ideas. This was their last game of the World Cup regardless of how other results came about, and the team played like it was a cup-final.
Even in the second-half, it was evident that Morocco was teh better team and creating better chances. They were even making more aggressive substitutions in hopes of getting the win.
In the 81st minute, Morocco struck again. They took the lead of the game one more time. It almost seemed inevitable that the win is within their clutches.
But, Iago Aspas scored in the 92nd minute for Spain through a delicious finish, breaking African hearts in the process. A lot of talks were done in regards if the corner through which he scored should’ve been given, but those talks are for some other day. They win the group and will be facing Russia in the Round of 16.
