Sevilla started the 2018-19 campaign under Pablo Machin, who made a name for himself with Girona.
He looked a good fit, as his attacking approach brought good results for the Los Hispalenses. In fact, they were sitting at the top of the La Liga table going into the 2nd international break of the season.
But the inconsistency soon seeped into the results, the gung-ho approach cost the team too many valuable points. The boiling point came in the Europa League, as the five-times champions were knocked out by Slavia Prague in the pre-quarterfinals.
Joaquín Caparrós is at the helm now and the target remains the same; finish in the top-four, and guarantee the Champions League football for the next season.
The club is in a position to achieve that target. Sevilla are sitting fifth on the table, with just one point separating them and Getafe in fourth.
But a lot more is riding on this match. For this is El Gran Derbi, one of the most hotly contested football derbies in Spanish football. Add Real Betis’ ambition of European football and you get a perfect recipe for another classic Seville derby.
For Betis, rising above the Europa Legaue places is probably out of their reach. But they can still match the 6th place position which they achieved last season.
As it is, though, Betis are 9th on the league table, just three points adrift of 6th placed Valencia.
A three-game unbeaten run was snapped by Betis with a 2-1 home win over Villarreal.

Both the teams have faced each other 42 times heading into this match, with Sevilla edging the head-to-head record with 17 victories, as opposed to Betis’ 10 wins.
