Lyon will be looking to snap their four-game winless streak when they host 2nd bottom AS Monaco in a Ligue 1 match at Parc Olympique Lyonnais, in Lyon, on Sunday night (IST).

Lyon:
At the start of this century, a new force was awakening in Ligue 1 to start an era which even the mighty Paris Saint-Germain have failed to emulate till now.

Fueled by the desire and backed by the unique talent at their disposal, Olympique Lyonnais came into the fore as a genuine threat to the established power like Marseille, Nantes, Monaco and Bordeaux.

Lyon won their first ever title came in 2001-02 season and went on to win another six to become the first French side to win seven Ligue 1 title on the trot.

However, Qatar Sports Investments group’s decision to invest in PSG changed everything in French football. Now there is only one force and even Marseille, for all their history and pedigree, and Lyon are finding it hard to keep pace with them.

No doubt Lyon have the talent but they can’t compete with the vast resources of PSG. At the moment, they are fourth in the table and sit at a huge 16 points behind the usual suspects Parisians at the top who are still unbeaten in the league.

Even the Champions League qualification is no guarantee for Lyon as only three teams can qualify for Europe’s premier club competition from France.

Monaco:
Monaco, on the other hand, are fighting a totally different battle this season. For a team which usurped PSG from the summit for French football just two years ago, the last thing they would have predicted is a serious danger of falling into the 2nd tier of French football. But they are at the moment, and their form indicates that this is not just any exaggerated statement.

The 2016-17 Ligue 1 champions are 19th in the table coming into this match, three points away from the safety. They have already sacked their title-winning manager Leonardo Jardim and replaced him with their own Thierry Henry.

But the fortunes haven’t changed with the change in the managership as Monaco have only two wins in the last 11 games that Henry has managed for the club.

Now the former Arsenal star has to negotiate a tough trip to Lyon without some of his first team players.
