The result followed an important 3-1 win over fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt. That was the big win, which came out nowhere considering the form and the position of both the teams.

Bayer Leverkusen meanwhile recorded their second successive win after a hard-fought 2-0 win over doomed Nurnberg in the last match.

Lucas Alario came off the bench to break the deadlock in the 61-minute before Kevin Volland put the game beyond doubts four minutes from the regulation time.
