JPN vs VIE Dream11 MATCH PREVIEW:
A place in the semifinal will be on the line when Vietnam meet Japan in the quarterfinals of AFC Asian Cup at Al-Maktoum Stadium, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Thursday evening (IST).
Vietnam:
This is Vietnam’s fourth appearance at the AFC Asian Cup and the quarterfinal stage is the farthest they have ever traveled in this competition. So whatever happens in their next encounter against the mighty Asian side Japan, this team may go down in Vietnam’s football history as the very best.
But the Golden Dragons certainly needed help from the sources beyond their power to qualify from their group. And they certainly got and managed to ride their luck.
Placed in the group against Asian powerhouse Iran and equally talented Iraq side, Vietnam were always going against the wall to get anything out of those two games, and as expected ended up losing 2-3 and 0-2 respectively against Iraq and Iran. But Yemen were the poor fourth side in the group, against whom they recorded a 2-0 win, courtesy of Nguyen Quang Hai (38’) and Que Ngoc Hai (64’ P) goals. The luck we were talking about was they managed to qualify for the knockout stage despite finishing 3rd in their group.
Vietnam faced Jordan in the round-of-16 match. They were the clear better side over the 90 minute period but fell behind through Baha Abdel-Rahman’s 39th-minute strike. Normality resumed though when Nguyen Cong Phuong leveled the score six minutes after the break. The score remained the same and the game went on to the penalties. And if the “Penalties are lotteries”, the Golden Dragon were the luckiest on the day as they won the shootout 4-2.
If you were thinking how big this result was for the whole Vietnam, just go to the social media and look for yourself, the reaction of their fans and players tell everything how sport can make a country forget all about their internal issues, at least for a short period of time.
Japan:
For some teams, for example like India, a place in the quarterfinals of the AFC Asian Cup feels like a distant dream, or if the Men in Blue were here, it would have called for a national celebration.
While for Japan, they may have come this far, but their journey has been far less than convincing and their performances have left a lot to be desired. A mere quarterfinal appearance is not going to quench the insatiable thirst of football fans back at home.
This is the country which breathes football. The same country which has produced Asia’s finest till date. This is a football nation which is a regular in the FIFA World Cup, and nearly, by the splinter of a hair, missed a chance to reach the quarterfinals in Russia.
But it’s already a past and nothing can’t be achieved by singing songs about it. It’s true as well as Japan are nowhere playing near the level which they showed last summer. At the moment, the Blue Samurai are just about hanging on to the results.
Maya Yoshida and Co. have won all their four games by a single goal margin. Well, the win is all that matters in a game of football but the teams like Turkmenistan and Oman hardly possess the talent and profile to put Japan under pressure.
That’s why Japan have to improve in the later stages of the competition as the teams will pose grave challenges against their title aspirations.
