Italy fared far better for their long absence from the FIFA Women’s World Cup, beating a top team in Australia 2-1 in their opening game.
Though the win tops every other emotion, head coach Milena Bertolini must have been delighted nonetheless at the fighting spirit shown by her players on the pitch.
It’s worth mentioning that Azzurri came from behind to win the game with the winner coming in the 95th minute from the head of Barabara Bonansea.

Australia were leading 1-0 going into the break and were far superior to Italy. If there was a team likely to score the 2nd goal of the match, it was the Aussies.
But Azzurri’s head coach Milena Bertolini made a tactical change at half time, replacing midfielder Aurora Galli with defender Elisa Bartoli. The move worked as Bartoli’s defence first approach made the life difficult for the Aussies in the middle of the park.
