Vietnam will be hoping to save their AFC Asian Cup campaign whey they play Iran in their 2nd group game in the competition at Al Nahyan Stadium, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates tomorrow on Friday night (IST).

Vietnam took the lead twice in their first game against Iraq but couldn’t hold on and in the end succumbed to the pressure. They lost the match 2-3 against Iraq with the winner coming in the 90th minute to make the defeat even more bitter.

In the context of the proceedings, it was a fair result as Iraq had the more possession, created more chances in the match and had more shots on target as well. While one of the two goals they scored was an own goal which was also the first goal of the match.

To make matters even more daunting for them was the other result in the group. Iran were against Yemen and won 5-0 to top the table coming into this fixture. So this is a must-win game for them now, or they should at least earn a draw and hope Iraq not win their game.

As mentioned above, Iran enjoyed a walk in the park in their first encounter in the AFC Asian Cup as they thumped Yemen 5-0 last time around. Two goals from Mehdi Taremi (12’, 25’), and one each from Ashkan Dejagah (23’), Sardar Azmoun (53’) and Saman Ghoddos (78’) did all the damage to the sorry looking Yemen side.

But even this big scoreline flattered the losing side considering the utter dominance of Iran in the game. The three-times AFC Asian Cup champions had the 71% of the ball, and created a massive 20 chances with 10 of them going on target. Not only that, they did a marvellous job at the back as well, not letting Yemen to have even a shot on their goal in the match.
