IRA vs CHN Dream11 MATCH PREVIEW:
A place in the semifinal will be on the line when China meet Iran in the quarterfinals of AFC Asian Cup at Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on Thursday night (IST).
China:
The Chinese are making the right noises in the ongoing AFC Asian Cup. They are into their second quarterfinals after getting the better of Thailand in the round-of-16 match. But it could have been all different.
The group didn’t produce any unexpected results, as South Korea topped it by winning all their games, while the Dragons ended at 2nd with two wins against Kyrgyzstan and Philippines respectively. Also, their encounter against South Korea ended in a 0-2 loss for them.
A country which is creating waves in the world of club football, capturing the best talent from under the noses of some powerful European clubs, it’s fair to say that the national football team has underperformed to some extent.
But the national team is being managed by the legendary world cup winning manager Marcello Lippi. The signs of improvement are there and were at their zenith in the last game where the team’s character came out in the open.
It seemed as if China would be going home after Thailand took the lead at the half-hour mark and didn’t look like conceding. But five fanatic minutes saw the Dragons scoring twice, Xiao Zhi (67’) and Gao Lin (71’ P) and comfortably saw out the match.
Now if the team wants to enter the semifinals for the first time in their history, they will have to produce their best ever showing in this tournament as Iran come calling in the next match.
Iran:
It’s not an exaggeration but Iran have looked the most formidable team in this tournament so far. The three-time Asian Champions topped their group, winning twice and drawing the other 0-0 against neighbors Iraq. They also comfortably saw out Oman in the round-of-16 match, courtesy of two first-half goals from Alireza Jahanbakhsh (32’) and Ashkan Dejagah (41’ P).
It will be Iran’s seventh consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals or the later stage, which signified how consistent they have been in this competition.
But the title victory and an appearance in the final has eluded them in the last 42 years. They last played in the final in 1976 when they were crowned the champions of Asia for the third time in a row. Indeed that was the golden period for the team, and all other generations are still trying to match those lofty heights.
But manager Carlos Queiroz is building something special with this talented group of players. Under the guidance of former Real Madrid manager, Iran looks complete at the moment, impenetrable at the back and clinical going forward.
That’s why anything less than an appearance in the final may seem an underachievement and failure for this group of players. In addition, Carlos Queiroz will be leaving his job after this tournament, so the 65-year-old will be eager to go on a high.
