This has been a very strange season for Everton. They have failed to live up to the expectations levied upon them, which was certainly a genuine tilt at the top-six.
But Everton have been anything but a side capable of breaking into the top-six. It’s not that they don’t have the quality, but for reasons like too many new players in the roster failing to create a team bonding, could be the reason for the inconsistency that has marred Toffees’ season.
Everton’s record read 13 wins, 7 draws and 14 losses. That accounts for 46 points and a 10th position on the table. That said, the Toffees can still finish seventh on the table as only three points separate them from Watford in seventh.
The Merseyside outfit won three times in the last four games. But the 0-2 win at West Ham showed that Marco Silva may be starting to imprint his philosophy on the team.
Home has been a problem for Everton. For they have won just 68 times at Goodison Park this season, suffering 5 losses this term.
Manchester United meanwhile are bobbling at the moment. All the optimism that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brought seems to be disappearing following some negative results.
There have been too many actually, five in the last seven heading into the next encounter. Two of those coming against Barcelona in the Champions League, ending their European adventure. Also, the Red Devils lost twice to Wolves, and once against Arsenal in that seven-game torrid period.
Even the wins are raising too many questions about the potential of the team. Ole’s men were lucky to some degrees after escaping with two 2-1 wins over Watford and West Ham respectively.
No wonder, Ole sent out a clear message to his squad ahead of this match. The former Cardiff manager claimed that some of his players indeed need a reality check.
However, the turnaround that United made under Ole has been significant. The biggest indicator is that United are still in the race for the top four places, which is a far cry from the position Jose Mourinho left the club in.
This is a significant game for United, even more so following Tottenham’s 0-1 loss at Manchester City. A win here would take United level on points with Spurs.
