Spanish giants FC Barcelona will go on to take Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna in what shall be a cracker of a contest between two quality sides.

Starting off the Champions League campaign with a win will be vital for both camps as they also have Inter Milan and Slavia Prague in the same pool.

Borussia Dortmund:

Dortmund currently resides at the second spot in the Bundesliga with nine points, just behind RB Leipzig by a point in the table.

Borussia Dortmund is fresh from a comprehensive 4-0 win against Bayern Leverkusen in which Marco Reus scored a brace, while Raphael Gurrero and Paco Alcacer also on the scoresheet.

Midfield player Axel Witsel seems to have recovered from his injury after making an appearance off the bench in the last game versus Leverkusen

Manuel Aknji, the centre back also appeared in a substition made in the League game.

Borussia Dortmund’s best recorded Champions League campaign was in 1997 when they were crowned the champions of Europe. Their next best finish was in 2013, where they won the runners up medal as their arch-rival Bayern Munich prevailed as the winners.

FC Barcelona:

Barcelona occupies the fifth spot in their respective league and hasn’t been able to ensure their true authority in the games the’ve played so far, especially since the absence of Leo Messi.

Messi has yet to play a game for Barcelona this season due to a calf injury he sustained, but Ernesto Valverde has recently confirmed that the talisman will be a part of the squad that travels to Germany for the Champions League fixture.

This will be the first time FC Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund will confront one another in Champions League history.

Surprisingly enough Dortmund has faced Spanish teams on 15 separate occasions at home in which they’ve lost just the three games.

The last time the two clubs were involved in a game was 21 years ago in the UEFA Super Cup, in which it was the Catalans who the tie 3-1 on aggregate.

On the contrary to Dortmund’s success versus Spanish clubs, Barcelona has registered just the two wins in seven games against German clubs in the Champions League.

Talking about players to watch out for, Jadon Sancho who had a productive international break and has already registered four assists along with scoring two goals in his four appearances for Dortmund.

While Sancho creates problems to the backline with his pace  Paco Alcacer is building a reputation of a prolific goal scorer for the German club. Alcacer has five goals and an assist in four games for BVB.

Frankie De Jong is justifying his price tag by motoring the midfield in such short notice. The Dutch midfielder has scored a goal and has also made an assist in limited number of games while having an astonishing 95% pass accuracy so far.

Griezmann having recorded historic Champions League nights might once again turn on the music by getting on the scoresheet. Antoine Griezmann has scored a couple of goals for FC Barcelona and has led the attack with grace in spite of the absence of the great Leo Messi.

Who will win:

With Messi back in attack for Barcelona, one can expect the Argentinian to single-handedly win his team the game. However,  the Signal Iduna Park is like a fortress and it will be difficult to breach even for the likes of Barcelona.
