Women’s football powerhouse Australia start their World Cup campaign with a game against Italy at Stade du Hainaut.

The teams: Australia and Italy

How they qualified:

  • Australia – World Ranking 6

qualified for the world cup courtesy of their deep run in the last edition of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. They entered the tournament in magnificent form and were the better team in the scoreless draw against South Korea. That result followed up by an 8-0 rout of Vietnam and the 1-1 draw in the final group game against Japan was enough to win the world cup ticket to France.

  • Italy – World Ranking 15

had a wonderful qualifying campaign, winning 7 times out of the first 7 matches to top Group 6. Their sole defeat came against Belgium, a match which had no bearing over the final positions in the group.

Captain and Vice-Captain options:

Sam Kerr of Australia. Image Credit @Twitter

Sam Kerr: Shortlisted for the best FIFA Women’s Player in 2018, Sam Kerr will come into the World Cup carrying a nation’s hope on her shoulders. The 25-year-old forward is in a rich vein of form, having topped the goalscoring charts in both National Women’s Soccer League and W-League. She holds the record of scoring in seven consecutive games for Australia. Need more reasons!

Barbara Bonansea: After Melania Gabbiadini‘s retirement from international football, Barbara Bonansea has become Italy’s biggest superstar. Deployed on the flanks or as a No-10, she is very hard to contain in the final 3rd.

Sara Gama – With 95 international caps, the 30-year-old central defender is the most experienced player in the team. Italy’s hopes of keeping the attack-minded Aussies at bay will depend a great deal on her performance. More often than not, this Juventus player delivers.

X-Factors: Italy’s Manuela Giugliano, and Australia’s Amy Harrison.

Giugliano is the creative spark in Italy’s team. Cage her, and you bet Italy will be half the side without her being on the ball.

While Harrison has been Australia’s best midfielders of late. She will be playing in the centre of the park. Expect her to dictate things in that particular area of the pitch.
