Bengaluru FC can extend their lead at the top to seven points when they host playoffs hopefuls ATK in the Indian Super League match at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, in Bengaluru, tomorrow on Thursday evening (IST).

Bengaluru FC dropped more points in the last two games than they did in the entire season before those two matches. But the biggest point is that the team remains unbeaten, and lead the regular season table by three points head of Mumbai City, having played a game less than them.

The draw came against NorthEast United and Mumbai City. And there were moments in those two games when the absence of super striker Miku never felt more since he injured himself.

Gyeltshen is a good player but Miku’s physical presence and his ability to hold the ball up and link up the play with Sunil Chhetri is a nightmare for any team’s defence. Against the Highlanders, the Men in Blue had many opportunities to produce a deadly counter attack but more often than not, Chhetri remained in seclusion in those situations.

The all-time Indian top goal scorer has found the back of the net on five occasions but remains without a goal in the last three matches. With the Business end of the season approaching and Miku out, the last thing the last season’s beaten finalists would want at this stage of the competition is Chhetri to lose his scoring boots.

The two-time Indian Super League champions have, to some extent, done a very good recovering job.

When the 2018-19 campaign started, the last season’s ghosts were still circling over ATK. For a team which has such a solid record in ISL, and feed energy off its unparalleled loyal fan base, it was a nightmarish campaign last season when ATK finished the campaign second bottom, accumulating just 16 points from the 18 regular season games.

So when ATK lost the two opening games, manager Steve Coppell was already under a higher pressure. But since then it has been a ride into an upward trajectory for ATK and they lost just once in the last nine games, winning four and drawing the other four. As a result, the Kolkata based franchise is very much in contention for the playoff positions.

At this moment, Coppell’s men are 6th, only one point adrift of 4th placed FC Goa.
