4 Major Rule Changes IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently held a meeting with the captains, coaches, and managers of all 10 IPL teams at its headquarters. The discussion focused on refining playing conditions ahead of the 18th edition of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL). After gathering feedback from team representatives, several rule changes were introduced.

Saliva Use for Ball Maintenance Returns

Bowlers will once again be allowed to use saliva to shine the ball starting from the IPL 2025 season. The restriction, initially implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, has now been lifted following consultations with all teams. This adjustment marks a return to traditional ball maintenance techniques that bowlers relied on before the pandemic.

Ball Replacement Option for Dew-affected Matches

Dew has long been a concern in night matches, making it harder for bowlers to grip the ball. To address this, the bowling team will now have the option to request a ball change after the 10th over when defending a target. The umpires will replace the ball with another one that has a similar level of wear and tear. However, the bowling team will not get to pick the replacement ball.

Additionally, umpires retain the authority to change the ball before the 10th over if they find it excessively wet, damaged, or out of shape. If the ball needs replacing again after a few overs due to dew, umpires will be required to make the switch based on the earlier mandate.

New Code of Conduct with a Demerit Points System

A revamped Code of Conduct will take effect from IPL 2025. The new system introduces demerit points and suspension points, which will remain valid for 36 months. This update aims to ensure fair play and maintain discipline across the tournament.

Expanded Scope of the Decision Review System (DRS)

The Decision Review System (DRS) will now include height-based no-ball reviews along with wide-ball reviews for deliveries outside the off-stump. Hawk-Eye technology and ball-tracking tools will play a crucial role in assisting umpires with accurate decision-making, reducing the margin of error in crucial game moments.
