Moeen Ali started his IPL journey with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2018. He played 19 IPL matches over three seasons for the Virat Kohli-led side and scored 309 runs at a strike rate of 158. With the ball, Moeen took ten wickets at an economy of 7.14. His skills were underutilized by RCB as he batted pretty low down the order and did not bowl as much as he should have. He was released by them after three years ahead of the 2021 IPL auction.

The IPL auctions took place on 18 February 2021 in Chennai. Moeen’s base price was set at INR 2 crores. Chennai finally bought him at 3.5 times the list price at INR 7 crores. They were involved in a bidding war with the Punjab Kings, who were also interested in the Englishman’s services. He has come in as a replacement for the veteran Harbhajan Singh who is currently a part of Kolkata Knight Riders.

In January 2018, Moeen was snapped up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He was with them for three seasons before being released ahead of IPL 2021. CSK grabbed Moeen’s services this time. But I have come to realise that sometimes it is just the way it is,” Moeen said.
