The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the most awaited cricket tournaments in the world. With the 2023 edition just around the corner, fans are eagerly waiting for updates on the trading window. In this article, we’ll take a look at the latest news on the trading window IPL 2023, including acquisitions, releases, and updates on players’ retention.
The IPL 2023 Trading Window: Acquisitions and Releases
The trading window allows IPL teams to acquire or release players from other franchises. One of the most significant trades this year was Jason Behrendorff’s move from Royal Challengers Bangalore to Mumbai Indians. Behrendorff, who played for Mumbai Indians from 2018 to 2021, was bought by Bangalore in 2022 but did not get any game time. Mumbai Indians acquired his services in a trade deal, hoping to strengthen their bowling attack.

Kolkata Knight Riders were the most active team in the trading window, acquiring Shardul Thakur from Delhi Capitals and the duo of Lockie Ferguson and Rahmanullah Gurbaz from Gujarat Titans, the winners of this year’s IPL. Thakur was initially with Chennai Super Kings before being picked up by Delhi Capitals in the auction last year. In an all-cash deal, the two-time champions shelled out INR 10.75 crore for Thakur. Ferguson, on the other hand, makes a comeback to Kolkata Knight Riders, having been associated with the team from 2019 to 2021. Also, Delhi Capitals have traded Aman Khan from Kolkata Knight Riders.

Player Retentions
The retention process allows IPL teams to keep a certain number of players from their previous squads. Sunrisers Hyderabad is likely to retain Abdul Samad despite not getting enough matches in the 2022 season. The team had retained the Jammu and Kashmir hitter for the last season but gave him only two games. Reports suggest that Samad was much sought after in the trading window, with Lucknow Super Giants and Rajasthan Royals both interested in getting his services. However, he stays on with his former franchise.
Final Thoughts
The IPL 2023 trading window has been a rollercoaster ride, with many players changing franchises and several rumors making rounds. While some teams have made significant acquisitions to bolster their squad, others have released players who have decided to focus on other cricketing commitments. As we approach the tournament, it’ll be interesting to see how these changes impact each team’s performance and whether they can achieve their goals.
