Sri Lanka tour of New Zealand 2018-19 | SL vs NZ Dream11 2nd ODI Match Prediction
Sri Lanka vs New Zealand Match Preview | Who Will Win Today Match
Maunganui, January 05 Saturday at 06:30 AM IST
After locking horns in the first ODI, New Zealand and Sri Lanka will reload at the same venue – Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui for the second ODI tomorrow. In the first encounter, hosts registered 45 runs after successfully defending a mammoth total of 371 runs.
With the win, New Zealand leads the three matches series by 1-0 and would be looking to the seal the series with another win. Sri Lanka, on the opposite, gave a tough fight till 30th over, courtesy Niroshan Dickwella (76 of 50) and Kusal Perera (102 of 86) but no support from the middle order disappointed the run chase.
Guptill & Neesham show for hosts
After winning the toss, New Zealand opted to bat first and faced a major blow when Sri Lankan skipper L Malinga sent Colin Munro back to pavilion at just 23 runs on board in the fifth over. However, Martin Guptill (138 of 139 deliveries) and skipper Kane Williamson (76 of 74) resurrected the innings and accumulated 163 runs for the second wicket which was carried forward by Ross Taylor (54 of 37) who laid a perfect platform to Jimmy Neesham (47* of 17) for the late assault. The all-rounder smashed five sixes in an over off Thisara Perera to help his side post a gigantic total of 371-7.
Visitors failed to capitalise the perfect start
Coming to chase, Niroshan Dickwella (76 of 50) and Dhanushka Gunathilaka (43 of 62) gave the kind of start Sri Lanka was looking for. Both the openers collected 119 runs for the first wicket which was carried off well by Kusal Mendis (102 off 86) at the third position but no support from the other end resulted in 45 runs loss for the side.
This is a must-win game for the visitors to stay alive in the series. Sri Lanka has already lost the test series by 1-0 and a loss here will cost them the ODI series too.
