As the caravan of the 2018 Afghanistan Premier League rolls on, Kandahar Knights will square off against Paktia Panthers in what is expected to be a riveting encounter at the Sharjah Cricket Association Stadium.

After going down to Nangarhar Leopards (by six wickets) and Balkh Legends (by 13 runs), Kandahar Knights are yet to open their account in the Afghanistan Premier League.

Their lacklustre batting has been at the heart of the woes thus far in the tournament. While they could only post an under-par 9-139 in the first match against the Leopards’, they were unable to chase down 5-165 against Balkh Legends.

The likes of Brendon McCullum and Paul Stirling have got off to starts but haven’t really been able to convert them into substantial scores thus far which has put substantial pressure on their relatively inexperienced middle-order that boasts of players like Karim Sadiq and Karim Janat.

Skipper Asghar Afghan played a crucial knock of 45 in the last game but he’ll hope the top-order comes good against the Panthers’ allowing the likes of Kevin O’Brien and himself to consolidate in the middle overs. Their bowling unit is well led by Amir Hamza (2 wickets at 25.00) but Asghar will hope the overseas recruits in Tymal Mills deliver the goods if they are to pose a threat moving forward in the tournament.

A chance for Panthers to consolidate the top-spot

With two wins in three games, Pakhtia Panthers are at the numero uno spot on the points table.

Unlike their opponents, the key ingredient to their rise at the top thus far has been their impeccable batting unit which has posted scores well out of reach of their opposition in the last two games.

Their top-3 in Mohammad Shahzad (162 runs at 54.00), Inshaullah Janat (85 runs) and Cameron Delport (124 runs at 62.00) have been in imperious form while the likes of Shenwari (53 runs at 63.00) and Sikander Raza (86 runs at 86.00) have chipped in with crucial knocks down the order.

In a tournament where the majority of the bowlers have been carted around the park, the Panthers’ are well led by Isuru Udana (6 wickets at 11.00) and Ziaur Rahman (3 wickets at 11.33) and Sharafuddin Ashraf (4 wickets at 25.75) making them a team to beat in the tournament.
